The barker bids us to enter his tent
on the fairgrounds. At the far left three flat faces merge
like a palimpsest beneath the two-headed orange cat, then
beneath the three-headed blue cat, and finally beneath and
into the head of a white wolf whose head becomes the tent
of the barker’s kingdom. An armless mermaid keeps afloat
in a small tank of water. The violet back flap of the tent
has been transferred to the front to show how we young children
would draw upon this long dragon with white chalk from our
classrooms.
