Arboreal
Spirits VI
1995
48" x 60"
oil on canvas |
A
partial reversal of some of the outer silhouette lines from
Arboreal Spirits III. The violets, blues, reds, and gold seem
to call out for a spiritual or religious theme. The figures
become nuns walking in a field of mystical flowers. The fifth
figure is a “Mother Superior”; the first is the
plodding, gardening nun; the second is the scholarly scribe;
while the third and fourth are the very devoted Madonna-like
beings. The third contains within “herself” a
smaller version of herself, within whom there is a skeletal
hint of an even smaller one, similar to the nests of wooden
Russian dolls containing ever smaller reproductions of themselves.
The figures are set against a religiously exigent, deep violet
sky.
